Hooked up to a Cambridge amp and Monitor Audio stand mount speakers i get a balanced, very detailed and neutral sound. I prefer the sound of Wolfson dac's over the more common Burr Browns used at this level as subjectively i like the slightly more ' analogue ' sound they produce. It's well built, plays even badly scratched discs flawlessly and supports gapless playback. I've had it for just under a year and the performance for what is a ' budget ' ( GBP 200 ) Just noticed this bumped thread and although i haven't done any mods to mine i thought i'd chime in and confirm what a great CDP the Onkyo is.

I bought the 7030 to use as a transport, the cd player sounded to thin on it's on. The PCB was not shown so I don't have ant idea of how hard it will be to replace these parts Their caps are C403 and C404 and can go to 6800/16v. The head phone amps are also njm4580's if you want to change them too. The caps will all be big but it will be OK to have long leads with the body in the air.
